What if?

An entire series of comic books used the premise of the question “What if?” to explore alternate versions of familiar Marvel stories. It was a cool concept and a unique way of thinking because it expanded the storyline and pushed forward into the realm of possibility. Few things do that in our world today. We like the status quo. We find comfort in it. True, all true, but it forces me to ask the question, “What are we missing?”

Several years ago, I read a book called Making Room for Life by Randy Frazee. The way of life presented in the book called for such a break from culture that it didn’t seem very practical, at first, but I kept being drawn back to it. I started opening up to the possibilities. What if we could rearrange our priorities? What if we could, literally, make more room for relationships and stop moving from one busy season into the next one? What if, became the best question ever. It taught us how to become more intentional in how we lived. We learned how to say, NO, regardless of the pressure to conform. We freed our minds to dream and follow God wholeheartedly. No longer did we simply fit him into our busy lives, but we built our lives around our relationship with God. Everything changed from that one little question.

Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
-Romans 12:2 (MSG)

In John’s gospel, he records that Jesus told his followers to live differently even if it meant life would be hard. He would be with them through it all, and in the end, it would be worth it no matter what. That’s the life I want to live. That’s the life I want to encourage you to live. Don’t let the world around you determine what steps you’re willing to take. Break free. Embrace the “What if,” and walk in a new adventure story with God every day.
