You change, No, You change

April 1, 2012 – Go, make disciples of all nations! Both sides of this “great commission” are important to where God is leading the church. We should be inviting people to these things. We should be going. We should be preaching the gospel. We should be making disciples, true followers of Christ that live for him above all things. Wait a minute. This is not a journal of things the church should be doing. This is personal, so therefore, I should be inviting. I should be going. I should be preaching. I should be making disciples. And in all reality, I should be living for Christ above all other things. Yes, I can hope for and pray for and lead others to this kind of walk with God, but it all starts with me. I can’t invite others and lead them down a path I’m not on.

Why would you focus on the flaw in someone else’s life and yet fail to notice the glaring flaws of your own? How could you say to your friend, ‘Let me show you where you’re wrong,’ when you’re guilty of even more? You’re being hypercritical and a hypocrite! First acknowledge your own ‘blind spots’ and deal with them, and then you’ll be capable of dealing with the ‘blind spot’ of your friend.
-Matthew 7:3-5 (TPT)

I am notoriously guilty of seeing the world, the church, and others and identifying the way things ought to be. The truth is, Son, the answer is in leading, not in proclaiming. We live in a social media blog culture where speaking out and even ranting are the favored method of changing the world. Not only is it not working, it isn’t the answer that Jesus modeled for us. True disciples are not merely inspired, they are made. Like Jesus we must walk the road with people, model the life of a disciple, and actually lead them. So, changing the world must first begin by changing you.
