Trying Times

Don’t set the affections of your heart on this world or in loving the things of the world. The love of the Father and the love of the world are incompatible. For all that the world can offer us—the gratification of our flesh, the allurement of the things of the world, and the obsession with status and importance—none of these things come from the Father but from the world. This world and its desires are in the process of passing away, but those who love to do the will of God live forever.
-1 John 2:15-17 (TPT)

It seems these days that we shift in and out of crisis mode constantly. We don’t even realize that we are in love with this world and the things it offers. We might even deny that fact if hard pressed, but our fears and our passions speak the truth.

What are you afraid of losing? Or maybe it should be phrased, what would you miss the most were it suddenly gone? The fact that your mind didn’t go immediately to your time with God is pretty telling. Now before you feel like I’m giving you a hard time, why do you think I’m writing this? This is a normal struggle, but one we must all recognize now so we can overcome and get our head moving in the right direction.

Our passions are clearly identified by the time invested in them. What do you spend the most of your free time doing, and probably even thinking about during your non-free time? Depending on what it is, you might say, “Come on, that’s not a bad thing!” To which I would respond, “That’s true, but even good things can be given a place in our heart that should be reserved only for our relationship with God.”

Open your eyes to this truth today. Please don’t fight against it. Rearrange your time and priorities. It will change everything.
