It's Hip to be Square

I have just had one of the most amazing experiences of the assurance of God in my entire life. I hope I can relate it here in a way that is meaningful to you. I began today, like most days, with reading scripture, praying, and journaling. I didn’t have much to write, so I started with the question, “Are all dreams selfish in nature?” I bounced that idea around a bit and then landed on this idea.

I have somewhat always felt like a square peg in a world of round holes. I don’t ever seem to fit quite right. I suppose the real question is, do I need sandpaper to reshape me, or a jigsaw to reshape the world? I don’t want to withdraw from the world, but I definitely don’t want to just conform either. Lord, I need your perspective today. I need wisdom in a world filled with self-oriented philosophy.

So, I set my journal aside and started to move on with my day, but God quickly drew me back.

The world of round holes will always offer a lathe and sandpaper, but God, if this is how you made me, how can I allow myself to be reshaped by their tools? Did you make all believers this way so that we could reshape the world?

And then, the Holy Spirit reminded me of John’s account of the New Jerusalem.

The angel who talked to me held in his hand a gold measuring stick to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. When he measured it, he found it was a square, as wide as it was long. In fact, it was in the form of a cube, for its length and width and height were each 1,400 miles.
