I don't like devotionals
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

Okay, so how can I say I don’t like devotionals while at the same time, I am writing one? Before you call me the ultimate hypocrite, let me explain.
Scripture is our ultimate authority. The direct revelation of the Holy Spirit in our lives will always agree with scripture. Our task as accurate handlers of the word of truth is to know and present it as it is. I am frustrated by the careless way scripture is handled by many devotional writers. When we are not diligent as Paul suggested to Timothy, we open the door for humanist philosophy to enter into the way we interpret God’s word. We place our values and interests into scripture rather than allowing the word of truth to teach us. Not to mention the fact that we already live in a world that is hostile toward the teachings of Christianity. Atheists, agnostics, and new agers attempt to take down Christianity by attacking our confidence in the Bible. While you may not be phased by these attacks, far too many young men and women walk away from faith every day because of this war on scripture.
The good news is that while God’s word is our primary source, the foundation of our faith is still the resurrection of Jesus. This is all the more reason for us to exercise due diligence as we read, study, and teach from scripture. It is also why we should appreciate the accountability of a small group, but that’s a thought for a different day. So, I guess I don’t hate devotionals. I just want to encourage you to be careful not to be led astray by inaccurate teaching, and certainly, work hard to teach the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
