Try Rebooting It

As you know, before moving to Montana, I spent a few years working in the IT world as a network and systems administrator for the school district back in Arkansas. That big fancy title meant that I spent a lot of my time solving problems and making sure the teachers had all they needed tech-wise for their classrooms. I learned something early on that saved me so much time in the arena of solving problems. When possible, try rebooting it first. I could go into a long explanation as to why that works so well, but honestly, I just wish it was that simple for my brain.

April 18, 2020 – I am finding it difficult to read scripture today, to pray, to journal… anything. Anyway, Lord, today is a new day. Renew my spirit… Blah Blah Blah… Forget it! I just can’t! Sorry, Lord, I will try again tomorrow!

Some days are just like that. It could be a combination of distraction, weird dreams the night before, a conversation that didn’t go well, or maybe anticipation of something that is weighing heavily on your mind in the coming days. Whatever the cause, we need to learn how to reboot our system so we can think clearly, reduce our stress level, and win this battle for our mind.

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)

Joy is the key. Our brain thrives on joy. When we become dysregulated or even beginning to spin in that direction, we have to come back to joy. Paul understood very well that this process begins with prayer, and not just any prayer, but a prayer of gratitude. Being thankful transforms the way we think. Like rebooting a computer, thankfulness clears the debris and clutter that builds up over time. We can then access the positive experiences we have stored in our memories. We remember God’s love and we love Him in return. It is God’s will that our relationship with him would be a constant source of pure joy.
