Communion

And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise, the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
-Luke 22:19-20 (ESV)

There are few verses in the Bible more familiar than these. Many churches take communion weekly as a part of their worship gatherings. In the church I went to as a child, we called it observing the Lord’s Supper, and we had a special table that was brought out for the occasion. These things are not bad, but, Son, don’t let familiarity or formality diminish your remembrance of Jesus.

God’s redemption of man, symbolized in the bread and wine, came together perfectly according to plan. Always a step ahead of the enemy, God’s hand directed every movement. I love how Max Lucado put it in his book, In the Eye of the Storm. “He had died for the creation before he had made him.” It’s all really remarkable and humbling.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

This is why we come to communion with a full range of emotions. There is a weight to it. Godly sorrow leads us to repentance. We must start here, like David:

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
-Psalm 139:23-24 (NLT)

Then, our remembrance leads to celebration and hope. By his blood, Jesus purchased our freedom from sin. His resurrection turns our sorrow into joy. I have come to believe that in a broken world where hard is normal, we need communion to reset our hearts and bring us back to joy. Do it often.
