Lord, Send a Revival

We desperately need God to intervene on our behalf. We so easily slip into routines that slowly, incrementally move us away from our closeness to God, and worse, we don’t even notice. As I write this today, it has been seven years since the Covid-19 pandemic quarantined the entire world. Much about the way we live was changed forever and change also stirred in the Church.

April 7, 2020 –We have strayed so far from you, Lord God. Bring us back to you in real repentance. Heal our land—our brokenness. There is a part of me that doesn’t want this crisis to end too soon. No, I don’t want people to suffer and die. I just want to live in a new world. May we give over our pursuit of money and fame and power to seek you alone, God. May we no longer take for granted the presence of people in our lives. May the pace of life move at the speed of relationships. May we all delight in your word. May our prayers be fervent and our love grow strong. Our hope is in you, Father.

At the time, I felt like God was exposing our lifestyles of idolatry. Our priorities shifted for the better. Our conversations deepened. It seemed that waves of awakening and revival would soon overtake the world, and then…

Anger. Misinformation. Accusation. Polarization. Fear. Anxiety. The enemy sowed discord. Momentum shifted yet hope remained. Then, subtly it seemed to turn the desire of so many to “go back to normal.” I phrase it that way on purpose. Like the Israelites in the desert, we desire to go back, and slowly, almost imperceptibly, we do. We return to busy. We return to old thinking patterns and business principles, and the fires of revival go out. It’s not too late! We can turn the tides once again as we fully surrender our hearts to God. Join me, Son, let’s humble ourselves and cry out to our Father in heaven in desperation.

Revive us so we can call on your name once more. Turn us again to yourself, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved.
-Psalm 80:18b-19 (NLT)
