Put me in Coach
Somewhere along the way the word “coaching” has become the buzz word of the 21st century. Even as I understand the call God has on my life of making disciples and shepherding people’s hearts, coaching is the best way to describe what I do. Here’s what I want to pass along to you (there I go, I am coaching again):
Being coachable paves the way for growth in your life. The heart of spending time with God, is all about getting to know him so we can grow our love for him. Coaches help us dig deeper and shine a light into hidden spaces. They warn us when our attention drifts or dangers approach unseen.
Being a coach is equally valuable. In Paul’s words:

We remain coachable so that we can, in turn, coach others. Every generation depends on the one before. Over time, our contentment, joy, and confidence grow as the wisdom of the ages elevates our starting point because we don’t have to make the same mistakes. We can improve our coachability and our coaching ability at the same time.
And to that end I have to say, abuse is not coaching. No matter how a person might justify harshness, abuse always wounds. You can’t address a deeper issue while you are trying to stop the bleeding. We must not praise coaches who produce desired results at the expense of destroying hearts.
Coaching is about healing. Son, choose to be a coach—whatever else you choose to do in life, coach others well. Make visible the path that your grandchildren will someday walk.
