Stop AND Listen

As I type these words, I have this image of running line drills in my mind. It feels like that’s the way most people live—constantly in motion, back and forth, wearing down because they have to keep coming back to the same point over and over again. This is also the way some people walk with God. They seem to cover a lot of ground, but never get anywhere. This is why God speaks in a still small voice. If he shouted, we’d just keep running. When he whispers, we have to stop everything and listen.

November 21, 2019 – Listening prayer is one of the most essential disciplines for leading others. In order to lead others well, you must be led. The whole world says, “push on, don’t wait, move forward, opportunity is passing you by!” What I’ve learned is that not all opportunities are equal. Some are worth missing. All too often we act in the name of God, but never really ask Him if what is before us is actually what he wants us to do. Well, we might ask, but we certainly don’t stick around long enough to hear his response. We run on ahead and then ask him to bless whatever we decided to do.

We’ve said it time and time again, prayer is a conversation with God. Yes, you can hear the voice of God. Maybe it happens differently for each of us, but when the Holy Spirit takes up residence in our heart, He longs for us to talk to him. He wants to provide counsel and comfort. God really does want us to walk with Him in the cool of the day like Adam and Eve did in the garden. We can’t walk with God and live at break-neck speed. We have to stop. Stop, and give God our full attention. He can handle “mobile” communications when he needs to, but he prefers time that is set aside, dedicated moments, for Him alone. We often quote Psalm 46:10 which says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Take a moment to read and reflect on all of Psalm 46 today.
