The Name of God

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
-Matthew 6:9 (ESV)

Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
-Philippians 2:9-11 (NLT)

I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not give my glory to anyone else, nor share my praise with carved idols.
-Isaiah 42:8 (NLT)

In our western culture today, the idea of a name doesn’t always carry the same weight as it once did. It wasn’t so long ago that the idea of name and reputation were somewhat synonymous, and your “name” extended beyond just yourself to your entire family.

In scripture, especially in the Hebrew culture of the Old Testament, a name stood for much more than simply what to call someone. How a person was known and what they were known for could not be separated. This is certainly true of God’s name. When we say that God’s name should be hallowed or given honor, we are acknowledging His entire being, his nature, and character.

God’s word is the story of how he revealed himself to all of creation. All along the way as people experienced God, they would often call him by a new name. Abraham called him God Most High and the Lord provides, Hagar knew him as the God who sees her, Job called him God Almighty, Moses experienced him as Yahweh, the God who heals, and the God who goes before the people. These are all different Hebrew words representing how people experienced God and knew him.  And of course we can’t forget Abba, a name of deep, relational intimacy, and Jesus, our Savior. These are just a few of God’s names.

As you pray today, call him by name. How have you experienced Him personally?
