Our Father
One of my favorite scenes from The Chosen is in the episode, Reckoning, from season 2. The episode is full of conflict and misunderstanding among the disciples, then finally Simon asks Jesus to teach them how to pray. I love his response:
“Now… now you are behaving like true students; this is what I like to see. And prayer is the first step in getting the mind and the heart right; it’s why you see me go to it so often.”
This scene is taken from Luke’s account of the story. I want us to spend a few days taking a deeper dive into the Lord’s prayer.
Some verses are so well-known their significance is easily lost, and that’s a shame because Jesus taught us so much more than just a model prayer. In the first words of the prayer, Jesus reveals God’s heart for relationship.
We come to him in prayer as our father. He is personal. He sees us as his people, but even more, he desires a personal relationship with each one of us individually. He is OUR father. Even the concept of the trinity reveals this to us. I realize that’s a deep well to try to dive into, but I believe God showed us in how he made us his desire to have connection with us. Father, God, Lord of all that is and ever will be. The Son, Jesus, God in the flesh. The Holy Spirit, talks to our spirit, prays on our behalf, comes to live in us, fills us, empowers us. We, and all he has created, are flesh and spirit. God relates to us, and all of creation, as Flesh and Spirit. Either he became flesh and spirit to relate to us, or he made us flesh and spirit to relate to him. God didn’t simply invent the concept of relationships. He is relational by nature, and he made us in his image.
So, when we say, “our father,” we cry out to the one who knows us, sees us, and loves us unconditionally.
