No Place Like Home

“The Scarecrow listened carefully, and said, “I cannot understand why you should wish to leave this beautiful country and go back to the dry, gray place you call Kansas.”

“That is because you have no brains” answered the girl. “No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful. There is no place like home.”

That book was published in 1900, but we could have this same conversation today. Oz represents this world, and the home Dorothy speaks of is our true home in heaven. Like the Scarecrow, we are mistaken when try to find ultimate fulfillment for our deepest longings in the pleasures of this life. I love how matter-of-factly Dorothy says, “That is because you have no brains.” So true.

March 14, 2020 – Why do we cling so tightly to this life? Our thoughts never seem to leave the here and now. We believe our greatest joys and hopes and life are all found here. This crisis has really brought the truth to the surface. In a panic, people are either barricading themselves in for the long-haul or running to find open spaces. It’s kind of crazy.

The writer of Hebrews talks about a different way to live, and Son, what you are really longing for… It is oh, so much more.

All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it. They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth. Obviously, people who say such things are looking forward to a country they can call their own. If they had longed for the country they came from, they could have gone back. 16 But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
