Why you gotta be so mad all the time?

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
-James 1:19-20 (ESV)

“Good. I can feel your anger. I am defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike me down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!”
-Emperor Palpatine

Can’t you feel the difference between those two quotes. The heart of God calling gently versus all the menace drawing Luke toward evil. I shudder because it feels all too familiar—too real.  Unfortunately, so many just go with it these days and let people experience the blunt force trauma of anger unleashing. Thank you, Lord, for not treating us the same!

March 12, 2020 – Anger doesn’t make anything better. Honestly, I don’t have much more to say. I’ve experienced a lot of breakthroughs in my life, but this one area seems to be my toughest battle. I didn’t use to be this way. Jesus, I crucify my flesh on your cross. I lay all of me down at your feet. Help me, I pray. I don’t want to hurt anyone by losing my temper.

I am happy to report that a few years down the road I am on a brighter path. I know you have seen at least part of that transformation in me, and for that, I am thankful. When I was younger, friends knew me as one of the most laid-back, go-with-the-flow people you could ever meet. Very little rattled me to the point of anger. I don’t really know what happened to that guy. My guess is he slowly drifted without intention. Life became more complicated. Stress and disappointment built over time, and Darth Short Fuse was born.

I suppose what I am trying to say to you today is, pay attention and give intention to who you allow yourself to become. Let Holy Spirit fill you. Bathe daily in God’s word. Develop the practices of silence and solitude in the presence of God. Bear the fruit of the Spirit. Love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. Goodness. Gentleness. Faithfulness. Self-control.
