Grab the Rope

Picking up from where we left off yesterday… those words, “grab the rope” sure are a welcomed sound when you fall into quicksand. Solomon put it this way:
__________________________

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
-Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NLT)

We are not meant to navigate through life on our own. I don’t exactly know what to attribute it to, but for some reason it is perceived as weakness when we need to ask for help. Maybe we’ve watched too many old westerns (as if that’s even possible). The “lone wolf” mentality doesn’t really even work well for actual wolves. In fact, the goal of the lone wolf phase is to join another pack, but to get to that point their mortality rate is much higher, and the dangers of daily life are far greater. So, why do we seem to value independence over friendship these days? Why is withdrawal and isolation so popular? The results are the same or even worse for us as they are for wolves.

Listen, I understand, no one wants to be perceived as “needy.” However, struggling when you’re in quicksand, how’s that working for you? God said from the very beginning that it was not good for man to be alone. He chose Abraham to be the beginning of a nation through which the entire world would be blessed. Jesus fulfilled that promise and his followers became “the church.” Union with God and unity with our new family in Christ meets our greatest needs. We will fall. We will get cold. We will face battles. The question is, are you allowing people into your life who can pick you up, provide warmth, have your back, and say, “grab the rope” in time to pull you to safety. Son, be a good friend to others, don’t be afraid to let them in, and you will find yourself surrounded by good friends every day of your life.
